Hawk is a common name for several species of diurnal birds of prey from widely separate families. These birds are superficially alike, being smaller than eagles and having large, keen eyes, hooked bills and sharp, curved talons. True hawks belong to the family Accipitridae, which also includes eagles and Old World vultures and contains over 288 species worldwide.

The Red Tailed Hawk is the largest of hawks, weighing an average of 1 to 2 kilos and reaching up to 65 cm in length. Its wingspan can reach up to 175 cm long.

The Northern Goshawk ( Accipiter gentilis) is the largest accipiter hawk in British Columbia. This hawk has short, rounded wings and a long tail, which helps it maneuver through the mature and old forest it selects for nesting and foraging. Two subspecies are recognized in B.C.

The Cooper's Hawk is the province of British Columbia's third most frequently seen hawk. Cooper's Hawks leave most of the state for warmer climes in the wintertime, although they may still be seen in large numbers in the southeast of the state, particularly in the Kelowna and Vancouver areas.
