It comes from the competition world where targets are mostly stationary. However the major draw back is the lack of peripheral vision on your support hand side. There are other issues with using this grip.

The "c-clamp" became a fashionable way to grip the rifle some years ago. With that variation, you drive the supporting hand out on the handguard as far possible and grabs the rifle from the side. The index finger of the support hand is sometimes laid parallel to the bore so that the support hand more or less "points" at the target.

The point of C-Clamp is to get your control hand as far forward as possible, to give you the most leverage on the gun for quick, precise movement. Think of it like having to close a door by the outside edge of the door rather than the handle, or near the hinge. You have more control over the door's position with the former, but it's less.
